Robert William Stumpp

Pitt professor worked in city, county governments

---- — HIGHLAND PARK, Pa. – Robert William Stumpp, dedicated public servant and University of Pittsburgh professor of Highland Park, went to heaven peacefully Monday, May 6, 2013, with his devoted wife of 40 years, Rosemary Williams Stumpp, at his side. He was 65.

He was the loving father of Jennifer Stumpp, Peter Stumpp and Julie Stumpp Walls; beloved father-in-law of Brandon Walls and Heather Killigrew; and cherished grandfather of Noah Robert Walls.

He is also survived by his sister, Helen Marie Stumpp Barnes; brother-in-law, Philip Barnes; niece, Elizabeth Barnes; nephews, Steve Barnes and his wife Maire; Peter Barnes; and Bryan Williams and his wife Natalia; great-nephews, Alexander and Robert Barnes; great-niece, Madison Williams; brother-in-law, James Williams and his wife Linda: sisters-in-law, Peggie Williams; and Karen and her husband Chad Bixler.

Bob was a son of the late Roy and Beulah Stumpp of Meadville.

A lifelong learner, Bob graduated from Temple University, Philadelphia, with a bachelor of science degree in health and physical education and earned a master’s degree in public policy and management from the University of Pittsburgh.

Bob served the people of the cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as well as Allegheny County through his 40-year career in government and human services.

Pursuing his love of politics, Bob ran for Pittsburgh City Council in 2003. He served on numerous local boards and retired in July 2011 from the Allegheny County Department of Human Services.

As a teacher and mentor to many, Bob was an adjunct professor at the University of Pittsburgh and winner of the Student Choice Award three years in a row.

Bob was a good and faithful servant of God and a moral and ethical man who enjoyed traveling with his loving wife, Sunday dinners with his family, playing golf and piano, dancing, music, movies and guiding everyone who crossed his path to think deeper and love and laugh more, always leading them to God.

Calling hours: Friends received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today (5-7-13) in McCABE BROS. INC. FUNERAL HOME, 6214 Walnut St., Shadyside.

Service: Funeral service at 9 a.m. Wednesday (5-8-13) in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Cathedral, Oakland.
