Richard B. Phillips

Pittsburgh business retiree had daughter here

---- — Richard B. Phillips, formerly of Roosevelt Avenue, Stowe Township, Allegheny County, passed away at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, where he had resided for the past three years. He was 92 years old.

Born Sept. 29, 1920, in Pittsburgh, Mr. Phillips was a son of Richard E. Phillilps and Christina Mary Klein Phillips. He was the fraternal twin brother of George.

He graduated from Oliver High School, Pittsburgh, where he was a notable athlete, and retired from Dravo Doyle Corp. in Pittsburgh, where he worked as an accountant.

During World War II, Mr. Phillips served with the Army in London, where he was on the staff of the Office of Strategic Services.

He married the love of his life, Bernice Marie Glassbrenner, on July 9, 1949. During their years of marriage, they resided mostly in Stowe Township, where they raised their four children. Bernice preceded him in death in 2012.

As a member for many years at St. Malachy’s Parish in Kennedy Township, Mr. Phillips belonged to the choir and was an usher and Eucharistic minister. Richard was an excellent bowler.

He is survived by his children, Mary Anne Phillips and her husband James P. Epstein, Sharon; Richard A. Phillips and his wife Karen, Lower Burrell; Bernice Christine Phillips and her husband Gilbert Armachuelo, Santa Clara, Calif.; and Scott R. Phillips, Morrisville, N.C. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Christopher, Rebecca, Robert and Andrew.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, George.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to John XXIII Home, 2250 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148.

Calling hours: Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday (5-12-13) in McDERMOTT FUNERAL HOME, Inc., 334 Forest Grove Road, Kennedy Township.

Service: Funeral prayers will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Monday (5-13-13) followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in St. Malachy Church, Kennedy Township.
