Sharon Regional retiree was active in community


---- — M. Gayle Smith of Sharpsville, formerly of Case Avenue, Sharon, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (6-19-13) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 88.

Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 11, 1924, in Pittsburgh to Chester Dale Moore and Ruth Quayle Moore.

She graduated from Edgewood High School in 1942 and attended Michigan State University.

On Aug. 16, 1947, she married her husband, Vernon Smith Jr., who preceded her in death in 2002.

Mrs. Smith retired from Sharon Regional Health System in 1991 after 22 years of service as the director of housekeeping.

She was very active in the community. She was a member of the former Sharon Country Club, past president of Sharon Regional Hospital Auxiliary and served on the board of directors of the former Girls Buhl Club. She was the assistant leader of Penn Lakes Council of Girl Scouts of America, past president of various PTA organizations within the Sharon City School District and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon.

Mrs. Smith is survived by two children, Linda Herskovitz and her husband George, Sharpsville; and Patricia Giocolo, Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, Leah and Abby Herskovitz, Sharpsville; her nieces, Wendy Karlovic and her husband Ed, Mercer; Margaret Patterson, Sharon; Ruth Ann Shearer and her husband Larry, Masury; a great-nephew, Jonathan Shearer; and Mary Badger, her special friend and caregiver.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon Smith Jr.; and two sisters, Kathleen Moore and Janet Patterson.

Calling hours: 5:30 p.m. to time of service Saturday (6-22-13) in SAMPLE-O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 555 E. State St., Sharon.

Service: Funeral service at 7 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home with the Rev. Dr. Glenn Hink, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon, officiating.
