West Middlesex man retired from Sharon Steel


- — Willard M. Allen, Reiber Road, West Middlesex, died Wednesday evening, March 12, 2014, at home, with his daughter Charlene and her husband Howard Spangler and grandson Justin Wetherstein at his side. He was 97.

Willard was born Nov. 22, 1916, in Hermitage, a son of the late Ester Allen.

He retired in 1979 after 40 years as a crane operator for Sharon Steel.

He was Presbyterian by faith and married Charlotte Powell on Nov. 25, 1938; she died Jan. 13, 1998.

In his younger days, he played baseball for the Cunningham Funeral Home team, around 1939.

He loved hunting with his sons and grandsons. He enjoyed watching sporting events with his grandsons and granddaughter. He loved going to his camp in Kelleville, Pa.

Survivors include: his daughter, Charlene D. Spangler, and her husband Howard III, West Middlesex; two sons, Glen W. Allen Sr. and his wife Darlene, New Wilmington; and David J. Allen and his wife Maudie, West Middlesex; five grandchildren, Troy Allen, Sue Cooper, Glen Allen Jr., Amy Allen and Justin Wetherstein; and eight great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his mother and stepfather, Edward Herman.

Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday (3-16-14) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 3126 Main St., West Middlesex.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday (3-17-14) in the funeral home, with the Rev. August Hurst of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township, officiating.

Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
