John J. ‘Pizzy’ Pozega

Ohio retiree, WWII vet had son in Hermitage


- — YOUNGS-TOWN – John J. “Pizzy” Pozega of Girard, Ohio, passed away Saturday evening, March 15, 2014, in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. He was 91.

Mr. Pozega was born Feb. 7, 1923, in Girard, a son of Mile and Barbara Malinar Pozega.

John, known to many as Pizzy, worked at The Ohio Leather Works, Girard, for 30 years until it closed, then worked at Wonder Bread, Youngstown. He retired from Trumbull County where he work in maintenance at Trumbull County Court House.

John was a member of St. Rose Church, Girard.

As a World War II Army veteran, he served in several battles and campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe.  

His wife, the former Mary C. Krohmer, whom he married July 2, 1949, passed away Aug. 25, 1992.

John is survived by: a son, Tom Pozega, Hermitage; two daughters, Linda L. Pozega and Diana L. Pozega, both Girard; two brothers, Michael Pozega, Liberty Township, Trumbull County; and Steve Pozega, Girard; two sisters, Gladys Miller, Vienna; and Barbara Cercone, Girard; two sisters-in-law, Dolores Peters and Elizabeth Murberger, both Poland, Ohio; two grandchildren, Tara and Allison; two great-grandchildren, Nolan and Claire; and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Spratt and his staff, St. Elizabeth emergency room and NEO intensive care unit, and Hospice of The Valley.

Calling hours: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday (3-23-14) in McCLURKIN MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 222 S. State St., Girard.

Service: Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Monday (3-24-14) in St. Rose Church, Girard, with prayers at 10:30 a.m. in McClurkin Memorial Chapel prior to Mass.
