Ruth Ellen Gladden

GC teacher was volunteer, member of organizations

- — Ruth Ellen Gladden, 83, Grove City, died peacefully in Grove City Medical Center on Thursday, April 10, 2014.

She was born Oct, 26, 1930, in Uniontown, Pa., a daughter of Ruth Romesburg Gladden and William D. Gladden, who served as superintendent of George Junior Republic from 1950-1969.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, William H. Gladden, who succeeded his father at George Junior from 1969 until his death in 1974.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Gladden Hackett; her niece, Kathleen Gladden; her nephew, William D. Gladden II; her great-nephews, William H. Gladden II and Kyle Gladden; her aunt, Lauretta Romesburg; several cousins; faithful helpers, Joan Turnbull and Bobbie Kays; and her beloved cat “Sammy.”

After receiving her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from California University and later a master’s degree from Penn State University, Ruth Ellen served the Grove City School District as a first- and second-grade teacher for 36 years until her retirement in 1990.

She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star for 61 years and was a past matron of Grove City Chapter 86. She was currently a member of Mercer Chapter 180. Ruth also was a former member and past worthy high priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem 53 in Grove City.

For 18 years Ruth was the intake chairman of the Grove City area Meals on Wheels program. Her love of animals led her to “adopt” several dogs and cats who found a caring, safe home with her.

As a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Grove City, for many years, she had been a former member of their choir and had also taught Sunday school.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Grace United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund; the Reynolds Grove City Pet Rescue, 169 Lee Road, Grove City, PA 16127; or a favorite charity.
