Charles D. Burkett, 852 Market St., Meadville, passed away at home on Thursday, April 17, 2014, of natural causes. He was 66.
Mr. Burkett was born April 11, 1948, in McKeesport, Pa. to Raymond C. and Nellie J. Smith Burkett.
He was a 1967 graduate of South Allegheny High School, McKeesport.
Following graduation, he enlisted and served four years in the U.S. Army. A Vietnam War veteran, he received the National Defense, Vietnam Service, Vietnam Campaign, Army Commendation, Armed Forces Expeditionary and National Service Defense medals and the Combat Infantry Badge.
After his discharge from the Army, he enlisted and served 20 years in the Navy, where he served many years aboard the USS Flagship Nautilus and spent time in Iraq and Korea.
He received the Navy Battle “E” Award, the Southwest Asia Campaign Medal with a Bronze Star and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon. He retired in 1992.
After retirement Charlie worked as a disc jockey for COOL 101.7 Radio, Meadville. He loved music and had a huge record collection of 45s and LPs from the 1950s to the latest on vinyl.
He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 and a member of the American Legion, both Meadville.
Survivors include: a daughter, Amber Nelis and her husband Gregory, Butler; his mother, Nellie J. Burkett, and a sister, Kathleen Coughenour and her husband William, all Hermitage; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, David Raymond Burkett; and a nephew, Marcus George.

Service: Graveside service and inurnment with military honors at 2 p.m. Saturday (4-26-14) in Deer Creek Cemetery, Sheakleyville Road, Cochranton, with the Rev. Mark Goswick, pastor of New Virginia United Methodist Church, Hermitage, officiating.
