Grace E. Sorg

Retired dietary worker formerly owned diner

Grace E. Sorg of Greenville, passed away at 6:59 p.m. Thursday May 19, 2011, in White-Cliff Nursing Home, Hempfield Township, after an illness. She was 89 years old.

Mrs. Sorg was born March 20, 1922, in West Salem Township to her parents, David L. and Mary Ellen Bartholomew Landfried.

On March 20, 1937, she married her husband, Gilbert C. Sorg Sr., who preceded her in death Aug. 15, 2003.

Mrs. Sorg retired from St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, from its dietary department. In the past, she also worked at Thiel College, Greenville; as a cook at the former Twin Kiss Ice Cream in Reynolds; the former Schuster’s Restaurant, West Salem Township; West Salem School District; and the former Pastry Shop and The Hilltop Tavern, both Greenville. For a time, she co-owned a diner, the former Goodie Plaza in Hartstown, Pa.

She was a devoted mother and grandmother and helped raise her grandchildren.

Mrs. Sorg is survived by: two sons, David Sorg and his companion Karen, Jamestown; and Robert Sorg and his wife Holly, Greenville; a daughter, Mary “Pat” Lorigan, Jamestown; 11 grandchildren, Dan Sorg, Greenville; John Sorg and his wife Darlene, Goldmine, Va.; Ron Lorigan and his wife Linda; and Kelly Lorigan, all Jamestown; Connie Sorg and her companion Scott Moffett, Greenville; Mike Sorg and his wife Missy; and Matthew Sorg, all Pittsburgh; Andrew Sorg and his wife Angie; and Becky Sorg, all Greenville; P.J. Martin, Mercer; and “Butchie” Martin, Titusville, Pa.; a brother, Darrell Landfried and his wife Pat, Greenville; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Gilbert Sorg Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Nellie Sorg; an infant daughter, Barbara; three grandsons, Don, Joe and Tom Lorigan; two brothers, Phillip Landfried and John Landfried; two sisters, Olive Claire and Violet McMillen; and an infant brother.

Calling hours: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday (5-23-11) and 10 a.m. to time of service Tuesday (5-24-11) in BAIRD FUNERAL HOME, 14 Louisa Ave., Greenville.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel.
