Ralph C. Hudspeth

Memorial Day honoree was Sawhill worker, Mason

---- — A memorial service will be held at a later date for Ralph C. Hudspeth of Whispering Oaks, 260 S. Buhl Farm Drive, Hermitage. He passed away peacefully at 3:09 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013, in his residence after a brief illness. He was 96.

Mr. Hudspeth was born July 7, 1916, in Cleveland, a son of the late William and Catherine Hudspeth.

He attended Sharon schools growing up.

He served as a second lieutenant in the Army, serving in the 100th Division, 398th Infantry Regiment in France and Germany during World War II, earning two Bronze Stars and a Battlefield Commission. He was one of three World War II veteran honorees in the 2008 Mercer Memorial Day Parade.

Ralph was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sharon, where he had served as a deacon.

He had worked as a tool and die maker at the former Sawhill Tubular Division of Cyclops, Sharon, for 28 years. He had also worked as a machinist at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant and also for the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

In his younger years, he had been a Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts Troop 3. Ralph enjoyed playing golf.

He was a 32nd degree Free and Accepted Mason and was a member of Lodge 810, Hermitage.

His wife, Betty L. John Hudspeth, whom he married Feb. 7, 1941, died in 2011.

He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Kahl, Sharon; his two sons, Robert Hudspeth and his wife Joyce, Charleston, S.C.; and William Hudspeth, Irmo, S.C.; and nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two sisters, Dorothy Skinner and Dorothy Mastantuono; and two brothers, Ed Hudspeth and Russell Pass.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care for the compassion and care given during Ralph’s illness.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Deacon’s Fund of First Presbyterian Church, 600 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146.
