Paul R. Palazzo Sr.

Invasion of Normandy vet, WE worker grew fig trees

---- — Paul R. Palazzo Sr. of Sharpsville passed away peacefully at 6:09 p.m. Friday, April 19, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 92.

Mr. Palazzo was born Dec. 21, 1920, in Sharpsville, a son of Victor and Josephine Tortorette Palazzo.

He graduated from Sharpsville High School, class of 1939.

Paul was a World War II veteran and spent several months in England training prior to the Normandy Invasion, where he landed on Utah Beach. Paul was with the 896th Heavy Armor Company and was a .50 caliber machine gunner with the rank of corporal.

Paul’s company was among the first troops to enter the underground V-2 rocket factory in Nordhausen, Germany, which held dozens of large manufacturing rooms and some unfinished rockets still on the production line. He helped in the liberation of hundreds of underfed slave workers.

He was awarded the Gold Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal; European, African, Middle Eastern Campaign medals with five Bronze Stars; and a World War II Victory Medal.

Paul was employed as a package designer and group leader for 41 years at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

He was a lifetime member of St. Bartholomew’s Church, Sharpsville.

Paul was a charter member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404 and American Legion Post 162, both Sharpsville.

Paul loved hunting and gardening. He always grew fig trees in his yard and would have fresh figs in September.

Paul is survived by his wife of 64 years, Tommasina Petrillo Palazzo, whom he married May 1, 1948, in Church of the Sacred Heart in Sharon.

He is also survived by three sons, Victor Palazzo and his wife Vickie, Hermitage; Michael J. Palazzo, Sharpsville; and Paul Palazzo Jr., Sharon; a daughter, Patrice Elaine Palazzo, Sharpsville; and five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Elizabeth, wife of Joseph Mascolino; Nina, wife of James Raspanti; Veronica, wife of Tony Arcori; Rose, wife of Robert Baker; and Delila, wife of Charles Joseph; and a brother, Carl Palazzo, husband of Mary.

Service: Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday (4-27-13) in St. Bartholomew’s Church, Sharpsville, with the Rev. Marc A. Stockton, pastor, as celebrant. Full military honors will be held following Mass at the church.
