William C. ‘Kootsie’ Kohut Sr.

Byzantine church member worked at Sharon Steel

---- — A funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated Monday for William C. “Kootsie” Kohut Sr., formerly of Stambaugh Avenue, Sharon. He passed away peacefully at 5:11 p.m. Wednesday (6-12-13) in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. He was 86.

Mr. Kohut was born Aug. 7, 1926, in Farrell to Michael and Katherine Steranchak Kohut, immigrants from Czechoslovakia.

William was one of 10 children. He was raised in Farrell and attended Farrell schools.

A decorated veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific theater of operations. During the war, Mr. Kohut operated a Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP) or Higgins boat, which was a landing craft used extensively in amphibious landings.

After returning home from war, he gained employment as a machinist with the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, from which he retired after 44 years of service.

Kootsie was a familiar face at the former German Home in Farrell, where he worked as a bartender in his early years.

He was an active lifetime member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage.

An outdoorsman, he enjoyed spending time at a camp in the Allegheny Mountains, Forest County. His family and friends will greatly miss his stories.

For the past two years, he was a resident of John XXIII Home, where he was very happy and received excellent care from the loving staff, many of whom he considered his new friends.

His wife, the former Phyllis Jean Yudt, passed away Feb. 8, 2007.

He is survived by: his children, Kathy Kohut and her fiancé Charlie Ross, Sharon; Karen Kovach and her husband Michael; William C. Kohut Jr. and his fiancé Betsy Casey; and Krista Kohut, all Sharpsville; a sister, Irene Schaller, Hermitage; and brothers-in-law, Henry Yudt and his wife Eleanor, Sharon; and Jerry Yudt and his wife Mary, St. Louis, Mo.

He leaves a granddaughter, Amelia Kovach, his greatest joy.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; his son, William Christopher Kohut; his eight siblings, Helen Salae, Mary Kohut, Margaret Dulaney, Pauline Palazzini; and Michael, John, Joe and Andrew Kohut; and his sister-in-law and brother--in-law, Mary and Frank Hoyson.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory to consider Sharon Regional Health System Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
