Mervin E. Beard Jr.

Central Christian member worked for Westinghouse

VENICE, Fla. — Mervin E. Beard Jr., a longtime resident of Sharon and Hermitage, passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in Venice. He was 95.

Mr. Beard was born April 10, 1917, in Brookfield to Mervin and Anna Gardner Beard.

Graduating from Sharon High School in 1937, he served in World War II. Merv was on one of the first transport ships to England, and as a sergeant in the 849th Army Air Force Engineering Squadron, flew on a B-17, delivering aid to the Dutch Resistance.

After returning from the war, he met and married the former Margie Rippel on July 26, 1946. They were married for almost 61 years.

Merv was an industrial engineer at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. for more than 43 years.

He attended Youngstown State University. His favorite things were golfing, swimming, dancing and especially, ice cream. He was a true gentleman and a lifelong member of Central Christian Church, Hermitage.

He is sadly missed by: his daughter, Beth Beard Divine and her husband Lloyd Divine, Venice; and his grandchildren, Cheryl and her husband Diego Mandelli, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Melissa Grover, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Christina Divine, Columbus, Ohio; and Justin Divine, Florida. Merv is also survived by his sister, Dorothy and her husband Glenn Jackson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margie; sister, Cetores Rimer; and brother, Paul Beard.

Service: Funeral services at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Jeffrey T. Moore, pastor of Central Christian Church, Hermitage, officiating.

Burial: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage, with his wife and other family.
