Wilson 'Hack' Amon

WWII veteran, GCC grad was sports enthusiast

---- — Wilson "Hack" Amon, 552 Butler Pike, East Lackawannock Township, passed away at 5:55 p.m. Sunday (6-16-13) in Avalon Springs, Coolspring Township. He was 88.                                   

He was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Grove City to William W. Amon and Marie Mehall. He married Mary Jean Robinson on June 30, 1943; they were married for 69 years.

A World War II veteran, he served in the Navy.

A graduate of Grove City College, he was employed at what was formerly known as ITT Reznor.

He was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer.

A great sports enthusiast, Mr. Amon battled for the leading scorer for three consecutive years in Mercer County in basketball.

His greatest loves in life were his grandchildren.

Surviving are: two daughters, Donna and her husband Thomas Durisko, New Wilmington; and Eloise Hines, Canfield, Ohio; a son, John R. Amon and his wife Judith, Charlotte, N.C.; six sisters, Shirley Platt, Walnut Creek, Calif.; Patricia Amos, Mercer; Betty Cochran in Midlothian, Va., Frances Buckley in New Carrolton, Va., Mary Esther Galeana, Sacramento, Calif.; and Judy Anthony, Medina, Ohio; a brother, Tom Amon, Cincinnati; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; four sisters, Gertrude Jackal, Roselyn Garrett, Agnes Inman and Nancy Filer; two brothers, Elliott Amon and William Paul “Ching” Amon; and a granddaughter, Eva Struthers.

Calling hours: 9:30 a.m. to time of service Friday (6-21-13) in CUNNINGHAM FUNERAL HOME Inc., 144 S. Pitt St., Mercer.

Service: Funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, with the Rev. James Kennelley, pastor of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Mercer, officiating.

Burial: Carpenter’s Cemetery, Springfield Township, with military honors by Wheatland-West Middlesex Honor Guard.
