William ‘Bill’ H. Allen Jr.

Cited GCC alum, champion golfer was church leader

---- — William “Bill” H. Allen Jr. of Woodland Avenue, Grove City, passed away at 11 a.m. Wednesday (6-19-13) following a brief illness. He was 88.

Known as “Bill,” he was born in Grove City on Aug. 4, 1924, to William H. and Emma Belle Bartholomew “Bart” Allen.

He graduated from Grove City High School, class of 1942, and Grove City College, class of 1950, with a degree in business.

Bill married Audrey G. Hoffman on Dec. 8, 1950.

He served in the Navy during World War II, starting his military career as a lab technician in California and finishing his service in Guam.

Bill began his employment with Grove City College in 1953. He had a variety of positions in the athletic department for the next 34 years. Bill instructed bowling and supervised and maintained the college’s bowling alleys. He advised the college’s bowling team and served as the Wolverines head golf coach from 1965 to 1988.

Also, Bill was the scoreboard operator for GCC basketball games in the College Arena and for football games at Thorn Field throughout the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. In February 2012 he was a recipient of the GCC Heritage Award, which recognizes and honors distinguished alumni.  

Bill was a longtime golfer and member of Grove City Country Club. He won the club championship in 1942, ’46, ’47, ’49 and ’63. He also competed in the championship flight of the Sunnehanna Invitational in Johnstown.

Bill was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City, where he served as a deacon and elder in the church.

He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 519 and American Legion Post 220, and of the former Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge 1579, all Grove City.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey, at home; two daughters, Stephanie A. Guarnieri and her husband Paul, New Wilmington; and Sharyn K. Case and her husband Alan, Burbank, Calif.; four grandchildren, Ryan Guarnieri, Spc. Paul Guarnieri, Pfc. Shelby Guarnieri and Shauna Case; and a great-granddaughter, Haley Guarnieri

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Steven D. Allen.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Saturday (6-23-13) in E.J. Fithian Chapel of Tower Presbyterian Church, 248 S. Broad St., Grove City, with the Rev. Jerry Deck officiating.

Burial: Crestview Memorial Park, Grove City.
