Sarah Turnage Q. Anderson

Pastor’s aide was active in fraternal organizations

- — Services will be Tuesday for Sarah Turnage Q. Anderson of Farrell. She departed this life at 6:02 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 82.

Mrs. Anderson was born July 2, 1931, in Farrell to Sarah Ellen Turnage.

She was a 1950 graduate of Farrell Senior High School.

Mrs. Anderson was a lifelong member of Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Farrell, where she served on Stewardess Board 2, the Missionary Board, senior and gospel choirs and Pulpit Circle and was a pastor’s aide.

Mrs. Anderson was previously employed as a bus dispatcher and teacher’s aide in the reading and math departments for Farrell Area School District. She previously served as a house mother at Unity House, Farrell, and worked many years for Barbara LeMon, who was a cherished friend.

Mrs. Anderson was active in several fraternal associations. She was a lifelong member of Twin City Elks Lodge 187 in Farrell and had been a lifelong member for more than 60 years of Zylphia Temple 66, also Farrell, serving as daughter ruler from 1968-1972 and 1981-1985. Mrs. Anderson served under four exalted rulers and two grand exalted rulers.

She also was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Murray Bell Post 7597, Farrell, and was a past president of its Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Anderson enjoyed serving in church, sewing, cooking, shopping for purses and shoes, hosting cookouts and eating ice cream. She was a motherly figure to many young men and women in the community.

She loved spending time with all of her grandchildren and enjoyed giving them popcorn and Bit-o-Honey candy.

Mrs. Anderson was affectionately known as “Muke” by her loving baby son, Jeffrey.

For the latter 2è years of her life, Mrs. Anderson resided with her eldest child, Ellen, who lovingly served as her caregiver and without hesitation provided the same love, support and care as she received by her mother.

Mrs. Anderson leaves to cherish her memory: four children, Ellen and her husband Honorald Houston Jr., Farrell; Shirley and her husband Winifred Wynn, Van Nuys, Calif.; and twin sons, Jerome Baymon, Pittsburgh; and Jeffrey Baymon and his wife Kim, Farrell; three grandchildren, Erika and her husband Christopher Gamble, Durham, N.C.; Erin Houston, Hermitage; and Courtney Houston, Farrell; a great-granddaughter, Cierra Gamble, Durham; five godchildren, Bryan Robinson, Brian Savage, Jeffrey Lampkins, Carl Roland and Tyrone Lampkins; and a host of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins and friends.

Mrs. Anderson was the youngest of her siblings and was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah Ellen Turnage; her husband, Robert “Bob” Anderson Sr.; a sister, Elizabeth Turnage Wilson; brothers, John, Henry Paul and Joseph Turnage; three stepchildren, Anna Jean Tatum, Robert Earl Anderson Jr. and Daisy Gardner; a very special nephew, Gary Turnage; and her beloved dog of many years, Ranchy Quarles.

Calling hours: 3 to 5 p.m. Monday (4-7-14) in J.E. WASHINGTON FUNERAL SERVICES Inc., 1059 Hamilton Ave., Farrell, and 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday (4-8-14) in Greater Morris Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Farrell.

Mrs. Anderson’s daughter, Ellen Houston, is receiving friends and family at her home at 415 Indiana Ave., Farrell.

Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday (4-8-14) in the church.
