Anthony ‘Tony’ DeBonis

Westinghouse retiree was outdoorsman

- — Anthony “Tony” DeBonis, Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at 2:28 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, in St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, Youngstown, following a brief illness. He was 85.

He was born April 8, 1928 in Sharon, the son of Rocco and Jessie Dagati DeBonis.

He attended Sharon schools.

In 1944 he gained employment at the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he worked for 42 years and where he would eventually meet his future wife, Josephine.

After Westinghouse closed it’s doors in Sharon, he began working in the maintenance department at MCAR, Hermitage.

He later returned to Westinghouse and worked in their Muncie, Ind., division as an instructor, and he retired as a Westinghouse field service agent, having logged many miles.

He was a member of Notre Dame Church, Hermitage, and the Knights of Columbus, Greenville.

Tony was an outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing with his family and friends, especially at the family hunting camp in the Allegheny National Forest, McKean County.

His wife, the former Josephine A. Reale, whom he married on May 8, 1948, passed away on Sept. 24, 2010.

He is survived by: his daughter, Carol Karol and her husband William “Bill” Karol, Sharpsville; two sons, Donald DeBonis and his wife Bonnie, and Jeffrey DeBonis and his wife Tina, all of Chagrin Falls, Ohio;  six grandchildren, Brian Schultz, Kaline Schultz and her husband Tom Adams, and Sean and Adam DeBonis, Sara, and Kelle DeBonis. He also leaves his three great- grandchildren, Phoebe, Logan, and Aurora Schultz.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution to his memory to please consider the Sharpsville School District’s Backpack Program. Calling hours: In keeping with his wishes there will be no calling hours at the funeral home. Condolences can be sent to his family by visiting the web site

Services: Friends are invited to join his family at funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Tuesday (4-8-14) in Church of Notre Dame, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage, with the Rev. Jeffrey Noble, pastor, as celebrant.

Internment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 1090 E. State St. Sharon.
