Robert Joseph Chiavazza

Organizations member worked for city, steel plant

- — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Robert Joseph “Tiny” “Cap” “RJ” “Bobby” Chiavazza of Sharon. He passed away peacefully at 4:14 a.m. Tuesday, April 8, 2014, in his residence with his wife at his side. He was 76.

Mr. Chiavazza was born Feb. 8, 1938, in Delmont, Westmoreland County, to Joseph and Josephine Ritenour Chiavazza.

He graduated from Sharon High School.

Robert joined the National Guard in 1954 and served until 1963, with an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant.

He was hired and worked under his father, head of the City of Sharon street department, until gaining employment with the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant, where Tiny worked for 33 years. After his retirement, RJ returned to the City of Sharon in its parks and recreation department.

Some of his memberships included recently joining First Assembly of God, Hermitage; Italian Home Club, Farrell; Italian American War Veterans, as an officer; Sons of Italy; and Farrell Lions Club, with which he was honored as Lion of the Year in 1997.

Cap was an avid outdoorsman and belonged to Western Reserve Fish and Game Protective Association, Mercer; National Rifle Association and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trap shooting and was a natural-born gardener.

He was a fantastic chef, but mostly will be remembered as a great family man and a good friend to many.

Robert is survived by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 52 years, the former Linda M. Smith, at home; his children, Robin Collins (William) and Amy Chiccarino (Gary Port); his grandchildren, Anthony Chiccarino (Heather), Carissa Giardina (David) and Jessica and Abigail Collins; and his great-grandchildren, Payton and Lucca Chiccarino.

He also leaves his brother, Dennis Chiavazza (Alison); and a special cousin, Thomas Price (Janice).

He joins his infant sister, Beverly Ann, in heaven.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory to please consider Medical Equipment Recycling Program (MERP), 2200 Memorial Drive, Farrell, PA 16121, which provided Bob and his family supportive equipment that made him the most comfortable when he needed it.
