John S. Getway

WWII paratrooper was Sawhill retiree


- — John S. Getway of Sharpsville passed away surrounded by the love of his family at 9:53 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2014, in the Hospitality Care of Hermitage. He was 92.

Mr. Getway was born Aug. 30, 1921 in Sharpsville to Charles Gyetvai and Victoria Santos Gyetvai.

Mr. Getway was intensely proud of his service in the Army during World War II where he served with the Airborne Infantry with the 82nd Airborne Division and 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

On May 28, 1958, Mr. Getway married his wife Elizabeth Gray Getway, who passed away in 2012.

John was employed by the former Sharpsville Steel Fabricators where he worked as a crane operator. He eventually retired from Sawhill Tube in Wheatland, where he had worked as an inspector in the Agloy Department.

Mr. Getway was a member and past commander of the Sharpsville VFW #6404; member and former fire chief and life member of the Sharpsville Volunteer Fire Department; life member of the 82nd Airborne Association; life member of the 509 Parachute Infantry Regiment Association; and former president of the Sharpsville Gridiron Club.

Mr. Getway is survived by his children, Stephen Getway, Reading, Pa.; Edwin Getway and his wife Wendy, Sharpsville; Daniel Getway and his wife Shari, Hermitage; Beth Ann Swartzbaugh and her husband Mark, York, Pa.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; sisters Irene Getway, Elizabeth Sato, Rose Papp, Helen Wiles, Julia Montich; and his brothers Charles Getway and Paul Getway.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday (4-15-14) in the funeral home chapel.

Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
