Wallace (Wally) G. Brown

Teacher, bee farmer grew up in New Wilmington

- — Wallace (Wally) G. Brown of Milton, Wis., passed away on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, after a brief but well-fought battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. He was 73.

Mr. Brown was born in Cleveland on Nov. 1, 1940, the eldest child of Paul and Pauline (McCullough) Brown. He grew up in New Wilmington.

Wally earned his first degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselar Polytechnic Institute in New York.

He served in the Army Reserve in 1963 and 1964, stationed in Germany.

After returning to the United States, Wally earned a master’s of engineering degree from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He also earned a degree in theology from Trinity College in Palos Heights, Ill., and a fourth degree in education from Beloit (Wis.) College.

Wally spent 22 years inspiring the young (and occasionally resistant) minds of Parkview High School students, teaching chemistry, physics, ninth-grade science and trigonometry. Unable to escape his profession, he also got to teach these same subjects at home in the evenings.

Following his retirement in 1999, Wally was able to devote more time to his hobby and passion, Brown’s Honey Farm. He supplied honey and beeswax products to several local businesses.

In addition to getting stung by bees, Wally loved gardening, woodworking, eating cherry pie, attending plays at the American Folklore Theater in Door County, York Mints and peanut M&Ms, reading Michael Perry books, cheering on his beloved Green Bay Packers, attending ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Mich., crisscrossing the U.S. with his wife Lonnie in search of new pottery pieces for her, and driving his big red F150. Wally also liked Limburger cheese (out on the deck. by himself). And Starbucks; he loved anything from Starbucks (the carbs and the coffee).

Wally also enjoyed spending time with his friends, especially those of Grace Evangelical Free Church in Beloit (Wally’s home church); Hope Lutheran Church in Milton; the Parkview School District; Stoughton High School; and the Rock County Bee Keepers Club.

Wally did not like whipped cream or wearing ties.

Wally was an amazing gift from God. We were incredibly blessed to have him in our lives. Thank you, God, for sharing him with us.

Wally is survived by his wife, Lonnie, Milton; two daughters, Karen Brown, Beloit; and Elizabeth (John) Derbin and a grandson, Nicholas, all Grand Rapids, Mich.; a son, Jon Maglio (Jami Klagos) and granddog Ruben, Janesville, Wis.; a son, Stephen Brown, Arizona; a brother, Ken (Lucy) Brown, Minnesota; a sister, Carol (Bill) Miller, Arizona; a brother and sister-in-law, Harlo and Joy Hadow and niece, Amy, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

The following family members got to heaven before Wally did: his parents; parents-in-law, Prof. Herbert and Vivian Hadow, Milton; and his daughter, Sarah, who we know was waiting for her dad with open arms.

Our special thanks to Dr. Peter Mahler, Dr. Kenneth Betts, and Dr. Amit Sanyal and their exceptional medical teams, as well as the caring staff at The Huntington. Thank you also to the many extend family and friends who have prayed for and supported us through this time.

Service: 11 a.m. to 12 noon Tuesday (4-22-14) with a Meet & Greet beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Hope Lutheran Church, Milton.
