Cooper-Bessemer, Sawhill worker was race car fan

- — Samuel F. Thompson Sr. of Lamor Road, Jefferson Township (Mercer), passed away at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, April 27, 2014, in his residence with his family by his side following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 65.

Mr. Thompson was born in Grove City on March 9, 1949, a son of Harry and Dorothy (Barnes) Thompson.

He had attended Grove City High School and faithfully served his country with the Marines.

On Sept. 2, 1971, Sam married the former Dorothy Blake, who survives.

He had been employed by the former Cooper-Bessemer, Greenville, as a millwright. He also had worked at Sawmill Tubular Products, Sharon, for his brother-in-law, Daniel Davis.

Sam enjoyed transporting the Amish. He lived to attend stock car races and to cheer on his son, Andy. He also enjoyed pony pulls.

He enjoyed being with his loving wife Dorothy, his children and especially his grandchildren. His faithful companion and best buddy was his dog “Peach.”

Sam was an avid hunter and would hunt with his son Sam and grandson Andrew, who got his first buck with Grandpa’s help.

He is survived by his wife at home; three sons, Samuel F. Thompson II and his wife Kelly; Grove City; and Harvey Thompson and Andy Thompson, both Mercer; and four grandchildren, Andrew, Hannah, Hunter and Taylor Thompson, Grove City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Harvey Lyons; his sister, Loretta; a stepson, Patrick Heckman; his great-grandmother, Ethel Barnes; and his father- and mother-in-law, Howard H. and Bertha Blake.

The family has suggested that memorial tributes may be made to the family through the funeral home to help defray expenses.
