Santo ‘Sam’ Napoli

Sharon Steel retiree was avid golfer, woodworker

---- — Santo “Sam” Napoli of 7356 Northview Drive NE, Brookfield, devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, died peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on Thursday, April 25, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 81.

Born in the town of Gioisa Ionica in Calabria, Italy, on Nov. 1, 1931, to Rafael and Teresa Lombardi Napoli, Sam immigrated to the United States in 1947, finishing his education at Farrell High School.

He was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, Farrell.

Sam worked for 43 years at the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant and retired in 1993 as a pit crane operator in the blooming mill. Afterward, he worked in maintenance at the former Valley View antique store and for J.V. Ferrara Enterprises.

His community connections included volunteer driving for the Brookfield senior citizens van; bowling with Knights of Columbus Masury Council League and the Hickory Merchants League; and golfing in the Shenango Valley Independent League, the Farrell VGA League and the Greenville-Sharon Steelworkers League.

Sam also served as vice president of the former Knights of Columbus Council 3984, Masury.

Sam loved woodworking and making furniture and other keepsakes for family and friends. He was a skilled handyman and was always available to help family and friends.

He enjoyed traveling and visited many far-reaching places including Italy, California, Las Vegas and Alaska.

Sam’s greatest joy was spending time with family and friends, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Frances Pilla Napoli; his daughters and their husbands, Gina and John Wittenberg, Westlake, Ohio; and Lisa and David Honicky, Bay Village, Ohio; five grandchildren, Ellen, Clare and John Wittenberg; and Sam and James Honicky; and nephews, Sam, Ralph and Robert Arena.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Angelina Arena.
