Mary S. Schenker

Longtime Sharon woman co-owned family market

---- — A funeral service will be held Saturday for Mary S. Schenker of 1010 Woodview Place, Hermitage. She died peacefully at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2013, in her home with her family by her side. She was 90.

Mrs. Schenker was born March 23, 1923, in Sharon, a daughter of John and Helen Gajarstey Sverchek.

She was a 1940 graduate of Sharon High School.

On Oct. 12, 1947, she married Edward M. Schenker, who preceded her in death Dec. 12, 2004.

For many years before retiring, Mary and her husband operated a family business, Schenker’s Market, at 495 George St., Sharon. They had many loyal customers and Mrs. Schenker always remembered those days fondly.

She resided in the family home on South Oakland Avenue, Sharon, for 45 years before moving to Hermitage in 1991. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Sharon.

Mrs. Schenker enjoyed flower gardening, traveling and listening to music. An avid reader in earlier years, she also loved cooking and doing needlework.

She was devoted to her family and treasured the time spent with her children and grandchildren. She was honored recently at a family celebration marking her 90th birthday.

She is survived by three children, Betsy Carroll and her husband James, Oil City; Edward Schenker and his wife Stephanie, Ventura, Calif.; and Eric Schenker and his wife Andrea, Santa Barbara, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Matthew Carroll, State College, Pa.; Nadine and Martin Schenker, both Ventura; and Erica and Mark Schenker, both Santa Barbara.

Also surviving are a sister, Elizabeth Sverchek, Hermitage; two brothers, Edward M. Sverchek, also Hermitage; and Matthew J. Sverchek, Bell, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by  her parents; an infant son, Martin Edward Schenker; her stepmother, Mary Valahovic Sverchek; a sister, Anne Sverchek; a brother, John Sverchek Jr.; and many in-laws and several nieces and nephews.
