Robert ‘Bob’ G. Brown

Vo-Tech founding director enjoyed golf, bridge, life

PEARLAND, Texas — Robert “Bob” G. Brown, Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of 224 W. Market St., Mercer, and Scranton, Pa., passed away at 10:10 p.m. Wednesday, July 3, 2013, in Pearland. He was 80.

Mr. Brown was born Feb. 26, 1933, in Clarks Summit, Pa., to Robert and Emma Brown.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Penn State University and a diploma in building construction from York (Pa.) Technical Institution.

He went on to become the founding director of Mercer County Career Center, formerly Mercer County Vocational – Technical School, Coolspring Township.

The Scranton area native began working for vo-tech in July 1970 during its development and construction. During his tenure, it evolved from a mostly instruction and occupation-oriented campus to a school that meets various needs including counseling, testing and serving business and industry.

Bob was director of vocational education and helped build Jeff-Tech, formerly Jefferson County-Dubois Area Vocational-Technical School, from 1966-70. He was supervisor of vocational education at Berwick (Pa.) School in 1965-66 and was a drafting and design teacher at Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre, from 1957-65.

Brown, who spent 35 years in education, retired Jan. 15, 1992, having been featured in an article published Sept. 26, 1991, in The Herald.

He moved to central Florida in 1992 and enjoyed every minute of living, golfing (five career aces) and playing bridge in The Villages.

Bob was married to his true love, Sandy, for more than 55 years.

In death, he joins his wife, Sandra, who passed in 2009, and son, Jeff, who passed in 2004.

He is survived by: his daughter, Jeanne Slazinik; his son, Rob Brown and daughter-in-law, June Brown. He also has four grandchildren, Danny Slazinik, Ian Slazinik, Emily Brown and Rachel Brown.
