A funeral service will be held Saturday for Joseph Walko of Sharpsville. He passed away peacefully at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, July 20, 2013, in Nugent Convalescent Home, Hermitage, after an extended illness. He was 90.
Mr. Walko was born March 3, 1923, in Sharon to Andrew and Mary Kraynak Walko.
Joseph worked as a foreman for the former Shenango Inc. in Sharpsville for 42 years, until his retirement in 1983.
Mr. Walko served in the U.S. Army during World War II and belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6404 and American Legion Post 162, both Sharpsville.
On May 21, 1955, he married Eugenia R. Reynolds.
Joseph was a member of the American Carpatho-Russian Citizens and Social Club, Sharon. A member and officer of St. John’s Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, Hermitage, he was a board member and was involved with pierogi sales.
He was an avid fan of Sharpsville High sports and the Pittsburgh Steelers and enjoyed time after church at Eat ’N’ Park, Hermitage. He enjoyed the Straussmyers picnic grounds, bus trips to casinos and traveling to numerous destinations with his parents and family.
He enjoyed going to Lock, Stock and Barrel, Sharpsville, and took his father and relatives every Election Day. He was a die-hard Democrat.
Joseph is survived by: two sons, Kevin A. Walko Sr., Sharpsville; and Mark J. Walko, Chicago; a sister, Kathryn E. Zickar, Hermitage; and grandson, Kevin A. Walko Jr., Sharpsville.
He was preceded in death by his loving spouse, Eugenia “Ruth” Walko; his father, Andrew Walko; his mother, Mary Kraynak Walko; a brother, Mike Walko; and sisters, Mary, Martha and Helen.

Service: Full military honors at 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service Saturday (7-27-13) in St. John’s Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, Hermitage, with the Rev. David Mastroberte, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Michael Polanichka, retired pastor.
Interment: St. John’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
