A funeral service will be held Tuesday for Gladys Mae Shipton of Findley Township. She passed away at 6:55 a.m. Friday, April 8, 2011, in Butler Memorial Hospital due to heart issues. She was 74.
Mrs. Shipton was born April 20, 1936, in Coshocton, Ohio, to Herbert and Dorothy Sterner Kimbrel.
She attended Knox schools and graduated from Mercer High School Class of 1953.
Mrs. Shipton retired in 1989 from Mercer High School as a baker in the high school cafeteria, where she had been employed since 1975. Previously she worked in housekeeping at the former Howard Johnson’s in Mercer.
As an active member of Wayside Community Church, Findley Township, she was instrumental in playing the organ, making church bulletins and helping in the kitchen with church dinners. Gladys was formerly a member of Covenant Orthodox Presbyterian, Grove City, where she was one of the church organists.
She volunteered with Grove City Meals-on-Wheels for many years.
Gladys loved spending time with her family, baking and crocheting.
Her husband, Norman Lee Shipton, whom she married July 24, 1954, passed away on Nov. 23, 1998.
Surviving are: four children, Karen L. Tavares and her husband Paul H., Grove City; Robert A. Shipton and his wife Judy L., Portsmouth, Va.; Lonnie E. Shipton and his wife Karen B., Grove City; and Jody D. Shipton and his wife Jennifer L., Emlenton, Pa.; eight grandchildren, Mindy Tavares Hubenthal, Rome, Ga.; Robert Shipton Jr, Portsmouth; Mich Tavares, Lucan, Ontario; Christy Shipton, Portsmouth; Megan Shipton and Lauren Shipton, both Grove City; and Kendra and Alex Shipton, both Emlenton, Pa.; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Kay Vaughn and her husband Clair “Tim,” Sandy Ridge, Pa.; and a half-brother, M.V. “Skip” Kimbrel, Clifton, Ohio.
Besides her husband, Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert Horner and Jessie “Leon” Kimbrel; and two half-brothers, Howard and Nelman Kimbrel.
