George Conrad Joseph

Longtime Farrell teacher was golfer, bowler

---- — George Conrad Joseph of 164 Hermitage Hills Blvd., Hermitage, a longtime former resident of Farrell, passed away at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 89.

Mr. Joseph was born Jan. 17, 1924, in Farrell, a son of Thomas and Mary Valetich Joseph.

He was a 1942 graduate of Farrell High School and earned his wings and flight officer rank as a bombardier with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and was employed by the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. in the time study department.

George received his bachelor’s degree from Westminster College, New Wilmington, in 1950 and taught mathematics and physics at Farrell Junior and Senior High schools for nearly 30 years, retiring in 1987.

He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, Farrell. He also belonged to the National (NEA) and Pennsylvania State (PSEA) education associations.

George was an avid golfer and belonged to a number of golf leagues throughout the years. He had a hole-in-one at Hickory VFW Golf Course. Also an accomplished bowler, he was a member of many leagues including the FNB league at Sunset Lanes in Farrell.

George was known to be able to fix anything and would often assist his family and friends with his expertise.

Surviving are: his wife at home, the former Virginia Monteson, whom he married Aug. 16, 1947, in the former St. Anthony’s Church, Farrell; three sons, Conrad Joseph and his wife Evaline, Tulsa, Okla.; Robert A. Joseph and his wife Deedra, Houston, Texas; and Bryan Joseph, Neshannock Township, Lawrence County; three grandchildren, Erica Brown and her husband Matt, Tulsa; Natalie Joseph, Houston; and Diana Milam and her husband Ben, Knoxville, Tenn.; and two great-grandsons, Tucker and Reece Brown.

He also leaves a brother, David Joseph and his wife Delores, Warren, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Mary Joseph, Sharpsville.

George was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Marlin, Leo and Richard Joseph.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Service: Funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (5-25-13) in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima-St. Ann’s Church, Farrell, officiating. Military honors by the Sharon Honor Guard will be rendered at the funeral home immediately before the service.

Interment: St. Anthony’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
