Barbara A. Kennis

Mercer teacher was groundhog ambassador


---- — Barbara A. Kennis, Mercer, passed away unexpectedly 8:30 p.m. on Friday (5-24-13) at Grove City Medical Center. She was 63.

Barbara was born on Dec. 1, 1949, to George R. and Margaret (Zemlin) Jerko in Kane.

She graduated from Punxsutawney High School class of 1967 and cum laude from Indiana University of Pennsylvania class of 1971.

Barbara worked 25 years as a teacher for the Mercer Area School District.

On July 18, 1970, she married her husband Michael P. Kennis who survives at home.

She was a member of St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church Hermitage. Barbara was very active in the church, where she taught CCD for many years.

She was an ambassador for the Punxsutawney groundhog Phil.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, collecting teddy-bears, country music, and teaching.

Barbara was very devoted to her family and particularly to her grandchildren.

Barbara is survived by her loving spouse Michael; three sons: Robert B. (Deana M.) Kennis of Mercer, Ryan M. (Kimberly) Kennis of Pittsburgh, and Richard C. Kennis of Gettysburg; her mother, Margaret Jerko of Home, Pa.; two sisters: Darlene (Dave) McNeil of Indiana, Pa., and Donna (Eugene) Bowser of Punxsutawney;  and four grandchildren: Riley A. Kennis, Kiley M. Kennis, Tyler E. Kennis, and Hannah K. Kennis.

She was preceded in death by her father, George R. Jerko.

Calling hours: 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday (5-28-13) in STEPHEN J. SHERMAN FUNERAL HOME, 2201 Highland Road, Hermitage. Parastas service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Online condolences may be expressed at

Service: Divine Liturgy will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (5-29-13) in St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church, Hermitage, with the Rev. Kevin Marks, officiating. Panachita service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Burial: St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Cemetery, Hermitage.
