Judith G. Newton

Thiel professor was active in church, literacy council


- — A memorial service is scheduled Thursday for Judith G. Newton of 16 Davidson Ave., Greenville, who passed away unexpectedly Saturday (6-21-14) in her residence. She was 70.

She was born Sept. 1, 1943, in Cleveland.

She was a 1961 graduate of Fremont High School, Cupertino, Calif., and earned her B.A. in mathematics from Santa Clara (Calif.) University, her M.A. in mathematics from the University of New Mexico and her M.S. in computer science from the University of Pittsburgh.

Beginning in 1973, Judy had been employed as a math and computer science professor at Thiel College, Greenville, and had served as the department chair for several terms. She received Professor of the Year recognition for 2014.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, where she previously had served on church council and as a deacon.

Judy was a longtime volunteer for the Greenville Literacy Council. She enjoyed traveling to many places throughout the world.

She is survived by a daughter, Marguerite E. Newton and her husband Bryce Reynolds, San Jose, Calif.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marguerite.
