Westinghouse retiree was sports enthusiast

- — George Varsho of Hermitage passed away at 5:30 p.m. Sunday (7-6-14) in Nugent Convalescent Home following an extended illness. He was 95.

Mr. Varsho was born Sept. 9, 1918, in McAdoo, Pa., a son of Michael and Mary Klembara Varsho.

He attended schools in Cleveland, Sharon and Sharpsville.

Mr. Varsho worked as a coilwinder group leader at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. for more than 40 years, retiring in 1989.

As a young man, George served as a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Camp P-70, Company 2343, in Fork Union, Va., from July 1935 to March 1936. He was very proud of his service and had many stories to tell his family about his experiences. While there, he and many other young men cleared brush in national forests and built bridges, fire roads and campgrounds.

George enjoyed golfing and bowling in a variety of local leagues and was a Cleveland Indians fan.

He was an avid vegetable gardener, sharing the abundance of his labor with family and friends.

He was a member of St. John’s Orthodox Church in Hermitage.

His wife, the former Katherine Olshavsky, whom he married on May 3, 1947, passed away Sept. 6, 2011.

George is survived by: his daughters, Katherine, wife of Gary Yonchak, Masury; and Georgieanna, wife of John P. Alfredo, Sharpsville; three grandsons, John D. Alfredo and his wife Mandy; and Edward J. Alfredo, all Sharpsville; and Michael S. Yonchak and his wife Jill, Delaware, Ohio; his great-grandchildren, Gina, Joey, Aris, Carmen, John Carlo, Dominic and Luka Alfredo; and his sister, Anna Petrosky, Hermitage.

In addition to his spouse, George was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Veronica Zieminick and Helen Brestelli; three brothers, John, Michael and Joseph Varsho; and an infant grandson, George E. Alfredo.

In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory to please consider St. John’s Orthodox Church Building Fund, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
