Catherine Young Friedline, formerly of Brookfield, passed away at 4 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, after a courageous eight-year battle with ovarian cancer. She was 72.
Mrs. Friedline was born Feb. 4, 1941, in Sharpsville, a daughter of Henry Glenn Young and Catherine Edith Brown Young.
A lifelong area resident, she was a 1959 alumna of West Middlesex High School.
Following her graduation, she was employed as a teller for five years at the former M&M Bank in Sharon and Hermitage. Cathy was an administrative assistant for 30 years at Sharon Regional Health System in the nursing and finance departments and was one of the founding members of the SGE Credit Union. She was also one of the early Longaberger Basket consultants and, following her retirement, was employed for two years at Macy’s in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage.
Mrs. Friedline was a member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church, Lackawannock Township.
A volunteer, Cathy gave much of her time to Sharon Regional Home Hospice program, Mercer County Habitat for Humanity and the American Cancer Society.
She enjoyed knitting, collecting baskets, participating in Relay for Life events and spending time with her grandchildren, whom she adored. She was also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.
Her husband, Jay E. Friedline, whom she married Aug. 21, 1966, survives at home.
She also leaves: two daughters, Ann Coleman and her husband Randal, Hudson, Ohio; and Heather J. Kesner and her husband Craig, Dallas; a son, Anderson “Andy” Young Friedline and his wife Heather, Clarion; two sisters, Rosemary Barlett and her husband Kenneth, Petrolia, Pa.; and Glenna Jeanne Young, Howard, Ohio; three brothers, James Young and his wife Shirley, Sharpsville; John Young and his wife Janice, West Middlesex; and Robert Young and his wife Candace, Mercer; five grandchildren, Grant and Lauren Coleman; Audrey Kesner; and Archer and Alivia Friedline; and many nieces and nephews.
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, three siblings and an infant grandson, James Kesner.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Hospice and Palliative Care or the Cancer Care Center Angel Fund of Sharon Regional Health System, both 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
