---- — Rachel Blanche Vassen of Campground Road, Shenango Township (West Middlesex), passed away at 7:30 a.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 89.

Mrs. Vassen was born June 13, 1923, in West Middlesex to John G. Walker and Mabel Maude Firster Walker.

She was a graduate of West Middlesex High School, class of  1941.

A homemaker, Rachel was a co-owner with her husband of Vassen Sunoco of West Middlesex.

She was a member of West Middlesex Presbyterian Church and was a life member of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 156, Farrell.

Rachel enjoyed going to camp, where she spent time with her grandchildren. She was an avid card player and enjoyed quilting.

Her husband, Charles Samuel Vassen, whom she married July 21, 1942, died in January 2005.

Surviving are: three sons, Ronald L. Vassen, West Middlesex; Richard Alan Vassen and his wife Emma, Hermitage; and Barry Lynn Vassen and his wife Alisa, West Middlesex; a daughter-in-law, Bonny Vassen, West Middlesex; eight grandchildren, William D. Vassen Jr., Becky L. Daniels, Brady A. Vassen, Brandy S. Heasley, Courtney L. Vassen, Kelly J. Carothers, David B. Vassen and Chase A. Vassen; eight great-grandchildren; and two stepgranddaughters.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Kenneth, Harold and John Walker; a grandson, Brad Samuel Vassen; and two sons, Thomas Samuel Vassen and William Dale Vassen.

Calling hours: 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday (5-12-13) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 3126 Main St., West Middlesex, with rites at 4:30 p.m. by Order of the Eastern Star.

Service: Funeral service at 10 a.m. Monday (5-13-13) in the funeral home with the Rev. Jason Hickman, pastor of West Middlesex Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment: Haywood Cemetery, West Middlesex.
