Joseph J. Battyanyi Sr.

- — Joseph J. Battyanyi Sr.,  Transfer, passed away peacefully at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, in Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. He was 97.

Mr. Battyanyi was born Jan. 2, 1916, in Sharon, a son of Sigmond Battyanyi and Ethel Puskai Battyanyi.

On Aug. 6, 1938, he married Elizabeth Klein Battyanyi. They celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary this year. Mrs. Battyanyi passed away on Oct. 25.

During World War II, Mr. Battyanyi owned and operated Joe’s Tire and Recapping in downtown Sharon. He retired from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp.

Joe was a member of Sharon Loyal Order of the Moose and of Reynolds Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7599.

Mr. Battyanyi was very family oriented and loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. His family will always remember time spent with him in the garden, watching sports on TV, listening to him play guitar, and helping him in the garage on a new project. He will be deeply missed.

Surviving are: a son, Joseph Battyanyi Jr. and his wife Barbara, Transfer; a daughter, Carol Zellefrow, Sharon; four grandchildren, William Hackett, of Gilbert, S.C.; Lenny Derr, Sharon; Joseph Battyanyi III and his wife Susan, Midway, Ga.; and Kenneth Battyanyi and his wife Chris, Carnegie, Pa.; four great-grandchildren, Joseph Battyanyi IV, Nicholas Battyanyi, Michelle Battyanyi and Jessica Battyanyi; and two sisters, Elizabeth Krauss and Margaret Gasparich.

Besides his wife Elizabeth and his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Gargano, Julia Kaye, Ann Blair Pollack and Rose Krauss; and three brothers, Steve Battyanyi, Louis Battyanyi and James Battyanyi.

Services: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Tuesday (12-3-13) in St. Rose Cemetery Chapel, Hermitage, with the Rev. David Williamson, pastor of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Hermitage, officiating.

Interment: St. Rose Cemetery.
