Helen C. Donnelly

P.J. Schmidt retiree was family historian

- — Born in 1922 to William and Helen King Donnelly, she celebrated her 91st birthday on Nov. 16.

She was one of nine in her family, all of whom attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School in Sharon. She graduated from Sharon High School in 1940.

Helen worked in the office of Golden Dawn Foods, later known as Peter J. Schmidt, first as a secretary then later as a buyer. She retired from the company after 48 years.

She was a member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, and had been an active member of the St. Joseph Women’s Guild and Food Pantry, where she had many friends.

“Aunt Helen” as she was lovingly referred, was a true historian of the family. Her nieces and nephews will always remember her for her amazing memory; she knew everything about each of them. She will also be remembered for her wonderful baking, especially at the holidays, and her loving heart. She treasured her family.

Surviving are: her sister, Dorothy Ogg and her husband, Bill, Sharon; three sisters-in-law, Alice Donnelly, Sharon, and Betty Ann Donnelly and Helen B. Donnelly, both Hermitage; 30 nieces and nephews, including Bill Donnelly and Susan Baas, both of California, who lived with Helen while growing up; and 56 great-nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: two sisters, Mary Louise Wassil and Adahl Donnelly; five brothers, William, Robert, Edward, Frank “Hank” and Joseph Donnelly; two brothers-in-law, Dr. John Wassil and Austin Donoughe; one sister-in-law, Jeanne Donnelly; and two nieces, Helen Donnelly and Kathleen Donnelly.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Church Food Pantry, 79 Case Ave., Sharon.
