Janet Verne Winklevoss

Longtime caregiver was active in ministries

---- — Janet Verne Winklevoss of Mercer died on Monday, Oct. 22, 2012, in her home from a long-term illness. She was 76.

Mrs. Winklevoss was born June 27, 1936, in Sharon to Verne Weaver and Edith Norby Weaver, the second-to-the-youngest of three sisters and one brother.

Janet graduated from Mercer High School in 1954, then began working at McDowell Bank.

Not long after, on Jan. 31, 1955, she married Alfred Landon Winklevoss of Jackson Center. Together they had three daughters and a son. They lived for a time in Painesville, Ohio, where Janet enjoyed a career in realty and became known as “The Crime Fighter Winklevoss” after petitioning for and succeeding in getting tougher laws against violent criminals.

Jan and Al, as they were fondly called, eventually moved back to Pennsylvania and settled in Mercer. Al had his own auto body business, but eventually gave that up to work for Filer’s Auto Body in Grove City.

Jan worked for MCAR in group homes for a time, then switched to Family Living. Jan was the caregiver for two adult special-needs women for 20 years, not retiring until her illness forced her to do so last year at age 75. She also cared for her own special-needs daughter and raised a grandson.

Jan was brought up Methodist and attended Charleston United Methodist Church for many years. During that period, she served as a secretary for the Rev. Merritt Edner. Later she became a member of Shiloh Ministries, where she was active in prayer and headed up a card ministry for a time.

Jan loved to shop and was an avid bargain shopper. She also enjoyed doing ceramics, but her favorite hobby was gardening. She loved to plant flowers and flowering shrubs all over the yard.

Janet is survived by two daughters, Cynthia Winklevoss; and Linda Woods together with her husband Dr. Kenneth Woods; and a son, Brian Winklevoss, all Mercer. She is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandsons are Dr. Jason Drivere, who is married to Michelle Patterson, West Middlesex; and Joshua Woods, who is married to Jennifer Latsko, Mercer.

Jan’s granddaughters are Tara and Kirsten Walmsley, both Grove City; Kristy Woods, Mercer; and Erika Dobay and Samantha Duirba. Her great-grandchildren include Drake, Brandon and Cassidy Drivere, all West Middlesex; and Cole Dobay.

In addition, Janet is survived by a sister, Gail Bohach, Lowellville, Ohio; and a brother, Bob Weaver and his wife Shirley, Hermitage.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alfred Winklevoss; a daughter, Sandra Drivere, Mercer; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Virginia Sweesy together with her husband Gene Sweesy; and Carol Anderson, all Hermitage.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Whole Life Services, 1565 E. State St., Hermitage, PA 16148; or Sharon Regional Health System Hospice, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage 16148.
