Robert Charles McCormick

Mason, Shriner owned plumbing business

---- — Robert Charles McCormick of Sharon, passed away peacefully in his home at 5:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, after an extended illness. He was 101.

Mr. McCormick was born Aug. 9, 1912, in Sharon, to Austin and Sarah Green McCormick.

He graduated from Sharon High School in 1932 and began working in the family business, McCormick Plumbing Co.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, serving with the 353 AAA (SL) Battalion and the 42nd Bomb Wing of the U.S. Air Corps. He served 11 months in the United States, then 32 months on the Eastern front in places like North Africa, Corsica, Italy, France and Germany. He achieved a rank of sergeant and earned a Good Conduct Award, Euro-African Medal with five Battle Stars, Victory Medal and the German Occupation Medal.

After returning home from World War II, he married Doris King on Nov. 25, 1945.

That same year, Mr. McCormick took over the ownership and operation of McCormick Plumbing until his retirement in 1984.

Mr. McCormick was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 810, Hermitage; Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory and its Legion of Honor; and Zem Zem Shrine, Erie. He was a past commander of the Zem Zem Legion of Honor and past president of Mercer County Shrine Club.

Mr. McCormick was strong in his faith and was a member of Sharon Alliance Church.

Mr. McCormick is survived by his friends and caregivers.

Besides his parents and his wife, Doris, who passed away in March 2004, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Retired Lt. Viola McCormick Daigle, a registered nurse in the U.S. Army Nurses Corps, and Ada Connelly.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Erie Unit of Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, PA 16505-5097.
