Mrs. Elizabeth Shannonhouse Chavers

Pastor's wife was active in church, loved children

- — A funeral service will be held Wednesday for Elizabeth Shannonhouse Chavers of 937 Emerson Ave., Farrell. She passed away at 11:03 a.m. Friday (10-11-13) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 83.

Mrs. Chavers was born March 12, 1930, in Philadelphia to Philmore and Mary Thomas Shannonhouse.

She was a graduate of Philadelphia City School District.

Elizabeth relocated to Farrell, where she married the love of her life, her husband of 56 years, the Rev. Robert E. Chavers Sr., pastor emeritus of Community Missionary Baptist Church in Farrell. Rev. Chavers, who affectionately called her “Elizabeth, My Love,” survives.

Mrs. Chavers was a teachers’ aide at Farrell Area School District and the Head Start program. She was an avid reader, enjoyed working crossword puzzles and loved children. Her favorite holiday was Christmas, when she brought happiness to many children.

As the former first lady of the church, she was an active member and spent 49 years as its clerk. Mrs. Chavers was also active on many auxiliaries, committees and groups of the church. She was a founder of the Shenango Valley Ministers’ Wives Association and loved fellowshipping with her “sister first ladies.”

In addition to her husband, she is survived by: four daughters, Debra Artist, California, Mrs. Robert (Ernestine) Hurt, Virginia; Samantha Chavers, Pittsburgh; and Angela Chavers, wife of Arthur Pate, Sharon; and five sons, Robert E. Chavers Jr., California; Robert “Jack” Shannonhouse, Farrell; Gene Shannonhouse Jr. and his wife Marsha, California; Guy Chavers and his wife Angie, Sharon; and Vincent Chavers and his wife Barbara, Sharon.

She also is survived by three grandchildren whom she reared, Roland Shannonhouse Sr. and his wife Tamy, Joshua Chavers and Preston M. Chavers.

A sister, Jean McCoy of Farrell; two sisters-in-law, JoAnn Collins and Joyce Chavers; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters; a brother; a son, Preston V. Chavers; and a daughter, Patricia Shannonhouse Jackson.
