Anna Belle Jones of Mercer, passed away at 3:05 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township. She was 89.
Mrs. Jones was born Feb. 21, 1924, in Coolspring Township to George Wesley Kelso and Ethel Margaret Anderson Kelso.
She was valedictorian of Mercer High School class of 1942, and graduated summa cum laude from Grove City College in 1946.
Mrs. Jones was a court stenographer and legal secretary for the Stranahan Law Firm and one of the few persons to pass the Pennsylvania State Bar Examination without attending law school. She was admitted to the local and state bar in 1964, the third female in the Commonwealth to have received such status.
Mrs. Jones respected the law and took great pride and joy in vigorously representing her clients for 45 years in Mercer. She and her niece, Mary Ann McConnell, practiced law together at Jones-McConnell P.C. from 1979 until 2008, when Mrs. Jones’ health declined.
Mrs. Jones’ colleagues and the court respected her diligence and excellence; her clients enjoyed her complete devotion to them.
Mrs. Jones was a family and community-minded individual. For many years she served on the boards of the United Way and Children’s Aid Society and Brandy Springs Park Inc., both Mercer.
Her husband of 63 years, William North Jones, whom she married Oct. 12, 1946, in Mercer, preceded her in death Feb. 11, 2011.
Surviving are: a son, James Kelso “Kelly” Jones and his wife Jill Kimmy-Jones, Greenville; a granddaughter, Amanda Anderson Maness and her husband Stephen, Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a grandson, Colin Davis Jones, Brooklyn, N.Y.
She is also survived by: a brother, Robert A Kelso, Mercer; and six nieces and nephews and their families, Mary Ann McConnell, Wesley R. Kelso, Betsy McConnell, Mark Jones, Kathy Harrison and Ann Davis.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Helen K. Thompson; brothers-in-law, Delmont R. Thompson and Harold L. Jones; sisters-in-law, Lucille B. Kelso and Joann Jones; and a great-nephew, Timothy Reed McConnell.
