Robert ‘Bob’ Sheppard Moose

Cattle breeder, East Lack supervisor served in 4-H


- — Robert “Bob” Sheppard Moose, formerly of Mercer-New Wilmington Road, East Lackawannock Township, died at 7 p.m. Monday evening, Nov. 4, 2013, in The Overlook nursing home, New Wilmington. He was 91 years old.

Mr. Moose was born April 4, 1922, in Volant to Roy N. and Elsie M. Ligo Moose.

He was a 1940 graduate of New Wilmington High School.

He married Mary Koontz on Jan. 1, 1948, in Friends Cove, Bedford County. She preceded him in death.

Bob and Mary were premier Jersey cattle breeders, active in both the Pennsylvania Farmers Association and Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Club, and operated Romar Jersey Farm. In 1976, they shared in partnership with their son and daughter-in-law, Chuck and Pam Moose.

He was a founding member with his wife, Mary Moose, of Living Word Church, New Wilmington, where Bob was one of the original elders and a small-group leader. He formerly served as an elder and Sunday school teacher at Neshannock Presbyterian Church, New Wilmington.

He served several terms as East Lackawannock Township supervisor and was a member of the Mercer County 4-H development committee. He helped in the building of the original cattle barns at Mercer County 4-H Park, Coolspring Township. He was active in various 4-H cattle clubs and was known for helping kids choose calves for their 4-H projects.

He is survived by: his daughter, Linda and her husband Scott McGrath, New Wilmington; his sons, Daniel K. and his wife Cheryl Moose, Blaine, Minn.; Charles R. and his wife Pam Moose, New Wilmington; and James R. and his wife Sherry Moose, New Castle; his sister, Barbara and her husband Tom Osborne, Albion, Erie County; and his sisters-in-law, Cathryn Moose, Mercer; and Audrey Moose, Reisterstown, Md.

He had 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, G. Richard Moose, Donald W. Moose and C. Dwight Moose.

Calling hours: 3 to 7 p.m. Friday (11-8-13) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington; and 10:30 a.m. to time of service Saturday (11-9-13) in Victory Christian Center, New Wilmington campus, 269 Cowden Road.

Service: Funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the church with Pastor Dan Moose, deceased’s son, and the Rev. Robert E. Cypher, church pastor, co-officiating.

Interment: Fair Oaks Cemetery, New Wilmington.
