Helen Bayer Shedden

Library volunteer, church secretary was bookkeeper


---- — Helen Bayer Shedden of Sharon passed away peacefully at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2013, in Clepper Manor, Sharon,  after a brief illness. She was 101.

Mrs. Shedden was born July 23, 1911, in Gary, Ind., to Anton and Katherine Slana Bayer.

She graduated from Sharon High School, class of 1928.

Helen worked as a secretary for Covenant Presbyterian Church in Sharon for 20 years. Previously she worked as a bookkeeper for the former Routman’s, Sharon.

On Dec. 24, 1942, she married Arthur Shedden, who passed away June 30, 1987.

Helen taught reading at Shenango Valley Community Library, Sharon, and was an excellent seamstress, creating gifts for many.

She had a strong faith and prayed for many people. She was known to those around her as “Grandma Shedden.”

Helen is survived by her daughter, Arleen, wife of the Rev. Hugh M. Stevenson, Hermitage; her son, Dr. Arthur H. Shedden and his wife Rebecca, Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandsons, Matthew R. Shedden and Peter A. Shedden.

Besides her husband, Arthur H. Shedden, she was preceded in death by her father, Anton Bayer; her mother, Katherine Bayer; and her brothers, Carl Bayer, Eugene Bayer and Albert Bayer.

Service: Funeral services at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Hugh M. Stevenson officiating. Following services at the funeral home, friends and family are welcomed to Arleen and Hugh’s home for refreshments and fellowship.

Burial: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage, with cremation arrangements by the funeral home.
