William ‘Bill’ C. Leavens

Centenarian, gardener was Westinghouse retiree

---- — LEWISBERRY, Pa. – William “Bill” C. Leavens of Lewisberry, formerly of Sharpsville, peacefully passed from this life at 10 p.m. Wednesday (5-1-13) in the home of his son in Lewisberry. He was 101.

Mr. Leavens was born June 22, 1911, in Sharpsville to Vincent and Mary Miksza Leavens.

Bill was a member of St. Adalbert’s Church in Farrell prior to moving in with his son in Lewisberry.

He retired in 1971 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a doodle operator and had 29 years of service.

Bill attended Farrell schools, enjoyed all types of sports and loved to tend his garden.

He married Emma Holsinger on April 11, 1941; she died Sept. 11, 2009.

He is survived by his son, William P. Leavens and his wife Linda, with whom he made his home for the past 7è years; a brother, John Leavens and his wife Sarah, Brookfield; three sisters, Frances Giroski and her husband George, Sharon; Ann Tarkanick and her husband Joseph, Brookfield; and Jean Christello, Ohio. There are four grandchildren.

Besides his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents;  five brothers, Anthony, Joseph, Michael, Stanley and Edward Leavens; and a sister, Mary Leavens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Celtic Home Health Care, 220 Wilson St., Suite 100, Carlisle, PA 17013; designate the donation “In Memory of William C. Leavens.” Due to allergies and health concerns of some of the family members, no flowers please.

Calling hours: Friends may call from 10 a.m. to time of service Saturday (5-4-13) in Holy Cross Cemetery Chapel, Longview Road, Hermitage. Condolences may be e-mailed to pustinger@verizon.net

Service: Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. Saturday in the cemetery chapel with the Rev. Joseph C. Campbell, pastor of St. Adalbert’s Church, Farrell, as celebrant.

Burial: In the cemetery next to his wife, Emma.
