Wilma Marker Riley

Ex-Masury woman was workplace rights advocate

---- — NEWARK, Ohio – Wilma Marker Riley of Heath, Ohio, formerly of Masury, passed away at 7:15 a.m. Monday, May 6, 2013, in the Hospice Inpatient Care Center at Licking Memorial Hospital, Newark, after a long battle with COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). She was 91.

Mrs. Riley was born in 1921 in Rockwood, Pa., a daughter of Dennis and Edith Critchfield Marker.

She was a member of Masury United Methodist Church.

She attended Marker Elementary School, which her father had founded, and graduated from high school in Rockwood.

She married John Riley on Sept. 29, 1940. Married to John for 55 years until his passing in 1996, she raised two sons and was a loving and devoted wife and mother.

Additionally she worked outside the home and was a forerunner of women’s rights in the workplace.

Besides her husband, John Riley, she was preceded in death by her second son, Frank Dennis Riley, who passed last year; a brother, Paul Marker; and six sisters, Blanche Kimmell, Marie Mosholder, Gladys Henry, Eva McClintock, Dorothy Marker and Thelma McLean.

She is survived by: her first son, John Douglas Riley and his wife Nancy, Thornville, Ohio; five grandchildren, Jennifer Mills and her husband Stephen; Kimberly Hoffman and her husband Richard; Brad Riley and his wife Susan; David Riley and his wife Beth; and Jeff Riley; and 10 great-grandchildren, Johnnie, Meghan, Abigail, Ella, Leah, Logan, Layne, Regan, Kyla and Kole; as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nephews and great-nieces.

The family expresses gratitude to hospice for their immeasurable services and kindness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Central Ohio, 2269 Cherry Valley Road, Newark, OH 43055.
