Anna Kerlek

Penney’s retiree was a founder of Orthodox church


- — Divine Liturgy will be held Wednesday for Anna Kerlek, formerly of Carolyn Street, Hermitage. She passed away peacefully at 7:20 p.m. Friday, April 25, 2014, in John XXIII Home, Hermitage, where she was a resident for more than six years. She was 91.

Mrs. Kerlek was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Sharpsville, a daughter of George and Maria Kimak Vasilenko.

She was a lifelong area resident and a 1940 alumna of Sharpsville High School.  

Following her graduation, Anna began working at the former G.C. Murphy and J.C. Penney stores in downtown Sharon. She then worked at the former Ordnance and Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. during World War II. She retired as a supervisor in 1981 from Penney’s in the Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage, where she was employed for 20 years.

A homemaker, Anna was a founding member of St. John Carpatho-Russian Orthodox Church, Hermitage, formerly located in Sharon. She was a member of Hermitage Women’s Club.

Her husband, Charles Kerlek Jr., whom she married Jan. 26, 1946, passed away Aug. 8, 1986.

Anna was a wonderful and caring mother and daughter who cared for her mother until she died in 1987.

She will be deeply missed by her loving family.

Surviving are: two sons, Jerome G. Kerlek and his wife Jacqueline, Chagrin Falls, Ohio; and Dennis C. Kerlek and his wife Anita, West Middlesex.

She is also survived by four grandchildren, Josh Kerlek and his wife Bonnie and their children Ellison and Nolan, Hermitage; Brett Kerlek and his companion Lisa Mullen and their child Ryland, Sharon; Dr. Anna (Kerlek) Pack and her husband Benjamin Pack and their child Louisa, New York, N.Y.; and Adam Kerlek and his wife Rachael and their child Zoe, Naples, Fla.

She also leaves two sisters, Helen M. Yusko and her husband Edward, Estero, Fla.; and Irene F. Henry, Las Vegas; and a sister-in-law, Alice Vasilenko, Hermitage.  

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Steve Vasilenko.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road; or John XXIII Home, 2250 Shenango Valley Freeway, both Hermitage, PA 16148.

Service: Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. Wednesday (4-30-14) in St. John’s Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage, with the Rev. David Mastroberte, pastor, officiating.

Interment: St. John’s Cemetery, Hermitage.
