Homemaker was active in church, community


- — Jeanette Elizabeth Huels of Greenville passed away at 12:46 p.m. Friday (3-14-14) in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township. She was 96.

Mrs. Huels was born March 20, 1917, in Chicago to Philip and Eugenia Donnelly Bohner.

She attended the Art Institute of Chicago and Northwestern University.

On Nov. 5, 1938, in Chicago, she married Dr. Theodore P. Huels and, prior to starting her family, was employed at Sears Roebuck and Co. headquarters in Chicago.

After raising her children, she worked in her husband’s podiatry office in Greenville.

As a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Greenville, Mrs. Huels taught Sunday school for many years, was a past president of the Lutheran Church Women and was active in the church’s Women’s Circle, Altar Guild, blood bank and food pantry.

Mrs. Huels belonged to Mercer County Historical Society and was a volunteer at Greenville Food Pantry and Meals on Wheels. She was a past worthy matron and a member for more than 50 years of Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 63, Greenville, and was a current member of Century Chapter 100, Jamestown.

She served on the board of the International Order of Rainbow Girls Greenville Chapter, had been a Boy Scout den mother and was a volunteer tutor at Greenville Literacy Council.

She was a member of Thiel Women’s Club, Greenville; Bayview Literary Club and the former Greenville Regional Hospital Auxiliary.

She enjoyed reading, knitting, crossword puzzles, playing bridge with her bridge club and traveling.

Surviving are: four daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Susan) Sturm, Greenville, N.C.; Mrs. C. Michael (Janet) Buerkle, Stuart, Fla.; Avery Huels, Lewisville, Texas; and Mrs. Durwin (Carey) Gates, Pittsburgh; two sons, Roger Huels and his wife Virginia, Coconut Creek, Fla.; and Kevin Huels and his wife Debra, Bella Vista, Ark.; and 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, on March 21, 2005; and a sister, Eugenia Valois.
