Carl David ‘Shot’ Hinkson

Lordstown plant retiree was decorated veteran


- — Carl David “Shot” Hinkson of North Darby Road, Hermitage, passed away at 11:15 p.m. Sunday evening, March 16, 2014, in his residence. He was 83.

Mr. Hinkson was born Jan. 6, 1931, in Mercer County to Frederick W. Hinkson and Helen Olive McWhirter Hinkson.  He married Jane A. Gilliland on Jan. 13, 1953.

He retired after 21 years of employment at General Motors Lordstown (Ohio) car assembly plant.

Shot was a member of Charleston United Methodist Church; Free and Accepted Masons Lodge 810, Hermitage; Scottish Rite’s Valley of New Castle Consistory; and United Commercial Travelers of America.

He honorably served as a sergeant in the Army in the Korean conflict from 1952 to 1954 and received the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He was in charge of the motor pool.

His family said, “Dad was our family architect and master builder.”

Survivors include, his wife, Jane A. Hinkson, of the residence;  two sons, Thomas and his wife Deborah Hinkson, Hermitage; and Timothy Hinkson, Hadley; three daughters, Barbara and her husband Larry Tremayne, Hermitage; Beth and her husband David Brown, New Wilmington; and Brenda MacPherson, Hermitage; six grandchildren, Jordan, Thomas, Josh, Crystal, Meagan and Shannon O’Hara; five stepgrandchildren, Ashley, Jason, Ryan, Amber and Jamie; five great-grandchildren and seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret and her husband Peter Tatusko, Hermitage.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, John A. Derry; a sister, Kathryn Hillen; and four brothers, Frederick, Paul, Jack and Don Hinkson.

Service: Private family service on Wednesday (3-19-14) with the Rev. William Locke, pastor of Charleston United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment: Private committal service on Thursday (3-20-14) at Mount Washington Cemetery, Jefferson Township.
