Robert K. Philson

Mill retiree of Stoneboro was coach, sports backer


- — Robert K. Philson of Stoneboro passed away peacefully at 7:20 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, in Countryside Convalescent Home, Lackawannock Township, after a brief illness. He was 86.

Born June 18, 1927, in Fairview Township, Mr. Philson was a son of John A. and Margaret N. Kitch Philson.

He attended the former Godfrey Country School, Fairview Township; and graduated in 1944 from the former Stoneboro High School.

Mr. Philson retired Jan. 1, 1987, after 39 years of service from the former Sharon Steel Corp.’s Farrell plant. Having worked in the old cold roll department, he was the last operator to finish roll stainless steel for Sharon Steel.

In his early years, he worked for the Sterling station of Stoneboro.

He was a Presbyterian by faith.

Bob was always involved with local sports. In high school, he was a member of the District 10 championship basketball team and continued to support his children in their sporting events. He was a charter member of the Lakeview Admirals Club and was always a supporter of Lakeview sports. He coached Little League and Connie Mack baseball for many years.

Bob enjoyed hunting and was a family man and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved to visit and socialize with friends.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II.

His wife, the former Bettie V. Rossiter, whom he married Dec. 16, 1950, survives at home.

Also surviving are: two daughters, Linda D. Urey and her husband Daniel, Mercer; and Tracy L. Philson, Stoneboro; two sons, Thomas W. Philson, Stoneboro, and his friend Susan Briggs, Mercer; and Terry L. “Chuck” Philson and his wife Cynthia “Cindy,” Stoneboro; five grandchildren, Kelly Philson, Washington, D.C.; Melissa McCreary and her husband Ryan, Edinboro; Joel Urey; and Jared Urey and his wife Krysta, all Mercer; and Michaela Philson, Stoneboro; and four great-grandchildren, Kendra Niglio, Mercer; Aidan McCreary, Edinboro; Asher Urey, Mercer; and Mason McCreary, Edinboro.

He also leaves three sisters, Dolores Linn and her husband Calvin, Clarks Mills; Mary Gustafson and her husband Bill, Jackson Center; and Nancy Walters, Delano, Pa.; and two brothers, Scott Philson and his wife Peggy, Fredonia; and James Philson, Mercer.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael T. “Buck” Philson; a sister, Norma Philson; and two brothers, John A. Philson Jr. and David O. Philson.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday (3-21-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. Adam J. Rodgers, pastor of Stoneboro Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Interment: With committal service and military honors in Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
