George V. Hunter

Active in ag groups, farmer won livestock awards


- — A funeral service will be held Monday for George V. Hunter of Worth Township (Stoneboro). He passed away in Orchard Manor, Grove City, at 11:50 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014, following an extended illness. He was 96.

Mr. Hunter was born June 6, 1917, in Grove City to Samuel Robb and Mary Denniston Hunter.

George married Evelyn McMichael on June 12, 1943. They celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2013.

During his life, George was a self-employed farmer and formerly was a metalsmith at Arthur Armour Forge in Grove City.

George served in the Army as a medic in World War II.

He was a member of Tower Presbyterian Church in Grove City and, in past years, had been affiliated with Irwin Presbyterian Church.

Active in agriculture throughout his life, George attended Penn State University. He was secretary for many decades in the Pennsylvania Suffolk Sheep Association and served as secretary for the Pennsylvania Shorthorn Cattle Association for many years.

George exhibited prize--winning sheep and cattle at many county fairs, Keystone Livestock Exposition and the Pennsylvania Farm Show for more than 50 years. He received numerous awards for his outstanding contributions to the livestock industry.

Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn, at home; nine children, Samuel Hunter and his wife Linda, Hagerstown, Md.; Mary Musser and her husband Donald, New Middletown, Ohio; Audrey Wheeler and her husband Dennis, Mercer; Donald Hunter; and W. Glenn Hunter and his wife Linda, all Grove City; Liz Kingsley and her husband Greg, Volant; Robert Hunter and his wife Polly, Pickerington, Ohio; Hazel Hunter, Stoneboro; and Frank Hunter, Jamestown, N.Y.; and 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, an infant, Emily, and Ethel Cummings; and a brother, Harold Hunter.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Monday (3-24-14) in Leesburg Presbyterian Church, 1831 Route 19, Volant.

Interment: Oak Park Cemetery, New Castle.
