Ruth Hersh

Business co-founder was active in Jewish community

- — Ruth Hersh, formerly of Sharon and Hermitage, died at 12:25 a.m. Thursday, March 20, 2014, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township, where she was a resident for the past three months. She was 93.

Mrs. Hersh was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Sharon, a daughter of Abe and Rachel Solomon Garrick.

She was a 1938 graduate of Sharon High School and an alumna of Bradford Business School in Pittsburgh.

Mrs. Hersh and her husband, Martin, founded Hersh Exterminating in Youngstown in 1946 and opened a second location in Sharon in the 1950s.

She worked as a bookkeeper for the business for many years and retired in the mid-1980s. Her son, David, continues to operate the business, which is now located in Hermitage.

Ruth was very active in the Jewish community in the Shenango Valley and Youngstown. She was a longtime member of the former Temple Beth Israel, Sharon, which recently merged with Congregation Rodef Sholom, Youngstown. She sang in Temple Beth Israel’s choir and was a member of its Sisterhood. She also belonged to Hadassah and the Council of Jewish Women.

Ruth was an avid swimmer until the late 1980s and, years earlier, enjoyed playing tennis.

She was a dedicated member of the League of Women Voters of Mercer County.

Her husband, Martin Hersh, whom she married Dec. 24, 1942, died July 3, 1981.

Surviving are three sons, Attorney Chuck Hersh and his wife Heidi, Sharpsville; David Hersh, Brookfield, and his companion Gloria Kirila, also Brookfield; and Harvey Hersh, Fort Worth, Texas; four grandchildren, Amy Gourley and her husband Mike, Raleigh, N.C.; Julie Dawson and her husband Ben, San Jose, Calif.; Stephanie Hersh, Washington, D.C.; and Marissa Hersh, Sharon; and four great-grandchildren, Stella and Anna Gourley; and Ezra and Georgia Dawson.

She also leaves a former daughter-in-law, Patti Hersh, Sharon; a sister-in-law, Belle Garrick, Los Angeles; her cousin Ruth Bergad’s husband, Saul Bergad, Pittsburgh; several nieces and nephews; and many relatives in Israel.

Besides her husband, Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Edward and Henry Garrick; two sisters-in-law, Blanche Garrick and Edith Buslik; a brother-in-law, David Buslik; a very close cousin, Ruth Bergad; and a niece, Susan Buslik.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or a charity of the donor’s choice.
