C. Dale Kaltenbaugh

Purple Heart recipient was farmer, C-B retiree


- — C. Dale Kaltenbaugh of Sandy Lake (Sandy Lake Township), passed away at 3:15 a.m. Tuesday, March 25, 2014, in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, after an extended illness. He was 93.

Born Jan. 5, 1921, in Mill Creek Township, Mr. Kaltenbaugh was a son of Albert J. and Lois G. Andrews Kaltenbaugh.

He attended the Kerrtown Country School and was 1938 graduate from the former Sandy Lake High School.

Mr. Kaltenbaugh was a lifelong farmer in Sandy Lake Township and retired from the former Cooper-Bessemer of Grove City as a supervisor in 1982 after 40 years of service.

He attended Oak Grove Church, Fairview Township and, in earlier years, served as a Sunday school treasurer for many years at Sandy Lake Wesleyan Church.

He loved the land and farming, and loved his family.

Mr. Kaltenbaugh was an Army veteran and served in the European theater of operations, receiving a Purple Heart for his war injuries.

His first wife, Sarah Isabel Oliver, whom he married Feb. 12, 1942, preceded him in death May 22, 1985. He then married Margaret Alice Angel Wilds on Sept. 28, 1991; she survives.

Also surviving are: four daughters, twins, Bess Gillette and her husband Robert, Stoneboro; and Grace McKeever and her husband James, Land-O-Lakes, Fla.; Joy Clayton and her husband Howard, Hartstown; and Kathryn “Kayte” Hulse, Sandy Lake; three sons, Rollin D. Kaltenbaugh and his wife Judy, Nescopeck, Pa.; David A. Kaltenbaugh and his wife Karen, Sandy Lake; and Donald G. Kaltenbaugh and his wife Charlotte, Cranberry, Pa.; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Charles B. Kaltenbaugh and his wife Joan; and sisters-in-law, Viola Kaltenbaugh and Jean Kaltenbaugh, all Sandy Lake.

Besides his first wife, Mr. Kaltenbaugh was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John A. “Skip” Kaltenbaugh and Robert A. Kaltenbaugh; and a stepdaughter, Karen R. Wilds.

Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Friday (3-28-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Overmyer, pastor of visitation of Oak Grove Church, Fairview Township, officiating.

Interment: With committal service and military honors at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
