A funeral service will be held Monday for Dorothy M. Kennedy, formerly of Wheatland. She passed away unexpectedly at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014, in St. Paul’s, West Salem Township. She was 82.
Miss Kennedy was born May 23, 1931, in Farrell to James R. and Elizabeth Will Kennedy.
She graduated from Hickory High School, Hermitage, in 1949, and was a 1952 alumna of the Sharon General Hospital School of Nursing. She earned her bachelor of science degree in nursing in 1957 from Duquesne University, Pittsburgh. In 1961, she received a master’s in education from Westminster College, New Wilmington, and her master’s in nursing in 1988 from Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.
Miss Kennedy was a staff nurse at what is now Sharon Regional Health System from 1952-55; a school nurse at Duquesne University from 1955-57; a nursing instructor at Sharon Regional from 1957-64; director of nursing education there from 1964-69; and professor of nursing at Youngstown State University from 1969-94. Dorothy retired as professor emeritus from YSU on Dec. 31, 1994.
She enjoyed music and was active in Faith Presbyterian Church, Hermitage, where she played the organ from 1968 to 2001.
Dorothy belonged to American and Pennsylvania State Nurses associations, College Club of Sharon, AARP, Shenango Valley Chorale and Sigma Theta Tau International.
Surviving are: her aunts, Katherine Kelly, Florida; and Anna Goda, Wheatland; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
