— Ruth L. Burns, of Wheatland, died at 3 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. She was 86.
Mrs. Burns was born Jan. 31, 1927 in Plain Grove, Pa., to Mont and Mary (Urey) Houston.
She graduated from Mercer High School in 1944.
Ruth was a homemaker and she worked for the former Riverside supermarket, Brookfield, as a bakery finisher. She retired in 1981.
She was a member of the Wheatland-Farrell United Methodist Church.
Ruth was a Girl Scout leader in Wheatland, a member of Farrell Band Boosters, past PTO president, a member of Wheatland homemakers, and taught Sunday school at the former Hickory Missionary Alliance Church.
She enjoyed playing cards, baking, ceramic, puzzles and was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan.
She is survived by her children, Cheri Clark of Sharon, Ron Burns and his wife Jacqueline of Murrysville, Pa., Pam Lehman of Wheatland, and Karen Shaffer and her husband Bruce of Transfer; a brother, Clair Houston of Mercer; eight grandchildren, Lorrin Streepy and her husband Dan, Meghan Whalen and her husband Jason, Ryan Burns, Scott Clark, Craig Clark, Jason Shaffer, Cory Shaffer and Samantha Shaffer and her fiancé Brent Rose; four great-grandchildren, Quinn Whalen, Parker Whalen, Noah Streepy, and Harper Streepy; several nieces and nephews and one special nephew, Terry Houston.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Burns whom she married June 5, 1948, and who passed away Sept. 30, 1969; two sisters, Edna H. McCool and Anna Sutley; five brothers, Robert E., F. Melvin, Wayne L., Harold L., and Clarence L. Houston.
